Homemade Lip Scrubs!

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

If you are like me, you tend to bit your lips when they don’t have anything on them. That can lead to little dry pieces of skin on them and no lipstick will cover that up nicely.

When I start noticing that I am doing this often, I like to exfoliate my lips to make them look and feel smoother.

Here are a few homemade lip scrubs that I have tried and they all work well (you can try massaging on the scrubs with a very soft toothbrush (very gently) for extra exfoliation):

*1 tsp honey, 1 tsp white sugar – mix together to form a paste and massage onto lips and leave on for 5 minutes, rinse with warm water and allow to dry, then take a dab of olive oil and massage that onto your lips – repeat scrub as needed!

*2 tsp grapefruit juice, 1 tsp white sugar – mix together and massage onto lips and leave on for 5 minutes, rinse with warm water and allow to dry, then apply lip balm – repeat scrub as needed!

*1 tsp brown sugar, 1 tsp white sugar, 1 tsp olive oil, chunk of chapstick – mix together and massage onto lips and leave on for 5 minutes – rinse with warm water and allow to dry, then apply lip balm – repeat scrub as needed!

Pretty City is a group that I like to follow to get all kinds of fun “girly” information. I love attending their “girls night” events & they have some great info under their top beauty picks, beauty reviews and their “beauty bargains” section – it’s a great site to check out and see what’s new! Here is what’s currently under their “beauty bargains”: http://chicagobeauty.com/beauty_bargains.htm

Help diminish dark under eye circles!

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Dark circles can be caused by a few things, try these tips to reduce the look of these pesky circles:

1. Get at least eight hours of  sleep every night & try to sleep with your head slightly elevated (when you’re lying flat, gravity causes fluid to collect in your lower eyelids, which may create shadows).

2. Moisturize the area with an eye cream containing nourishing antioxidants that help protect the skin, such as green-tea and grape-seed extracts, and vitamins C, E and K.

3. Cover up with a yellow-based concealer that is about 1 to 2  shades lighter than your foundation (applying it in an upside down triangle shape helps blend it in and avoids the “raccoon look”).

Nail polish trends for Spring 2010!

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

I did a makeup trend so I thought I would throw in some nail polish info because I am loving the colors this season. The colors that are popping up are lilac, taupe, beige-grey, light to HOT pinks, peach, turquoise, and an orange-red.

Eyebrows – the frame to your face!

Monday, March 29th, 2010

1. Decide on your eyebrow shape first.

2. Use a quality pair of tweezers.

3. Trim eyebrows with a small comb and rounded nail scissors.

4. Clean up top of eyebrows if needed.

5. Use eyebrow pencil or shadow for correcting, but definitely use for filling them in – darker eyebrows make you look younger!

6. Don’t stand too close to the mirror while tweezing! This can mess up your perception, so step back every few tweezes.

7. Don’t put a shape that isn’t flattering to your face! The hair should start from a line going along the side of your nose and end where your eye comes to a point.

8. You can use a little ice or Ambisole to numb the most sensitive areas.

9. Don’t shave your eyebrows, but an eyebrow shaper is a great tool to use for quicker results.

10.  Tweeze correctly, don’t pull against the grain.

And if all that makes you nervous, then just go to a professional to handle your eyebrow grooming. Whatever you do, just make sure to get them done because they frame your face and can make your makeup look its best!

Clean those makeup brushes!

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Bottled makeup brush cleaner is used for quick daily clean ups, but it does not deep clean. Make sure to deep clean your brushes every other week to get rid of any old makeup that can lead to bacteria build up. Rub the brushes on a paper towel soaked in extra virgin olive oil. Rub until the bristles come out clean and then rinse with shampoo. Shape brushes back into place and lay flat to dry.

Cream blush!

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Use cream blush instead of powder to give your face a nice sheen and some added moisturizer. Apply it with your finger tips in a circular motion on the apple of your cheeks and go up into the temples. Add a touch to the tip of your nose, forehead, and chin as well!

A face primer you wouldn’t think of!

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Have you tried face primers that are just not working on your oily skin? Try applying a thin layer of liquid Milk of Magnesia on your face and eyelids after using an oil free moisturizer. After you let it dry, brush off some of the residue and continue with your regular makeup routine.
