My favorite makeup products right now!

February 11th, 2011

L’oreal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Color Correcting Primers: these primers come in three different colors and each one of them has worked really good for the different skin types they are intended for. The anti-redness works great on those with rosacea & the two anti-dull colors give a really nice illuminated glow to the skin. For a reasonable price, these primers are a really a good buy.

Beauty So Clean Cosmetic Sanitizer Mist: this product is not just for makeup artists, but a great product every girl should have in her makeup bag. It sanitizes all powder-based makeup without drying it out! I also like the tip they have on their website: “Portable Clean! This take-it-anywhere size works for those shopping trips when you really want to try that makeup tester in the store…One mist and you are germs free!”

Makeup Shelf Life

February 11th, 2011

With me doing makeup on other people, I really need to take care on keeping all my products and brushes very clean, but I also need to make sure that I am not using any old products. When we are dealing with our own makeup, we may not care as much about it, but here is a tip to help keep you more on top of it.

You may may have never noticed this, but many makeup products have an “open jar symbol” near the ingredients listed on it’s label. It will show a number with an “m” next to it meaning the number of months you should only save it for once you open it for regular use. Read the rest of this entry »

Product Review: Timewise Matte-Wear Liquid Foundation by Mary Kay

February 10th, 2011

Yup, that’s right…MARY KAY! If you are like me, Mary Kay wouldn’t exactly be the first line of makeup you would go to, to try something new. I’ve tried their products before and nothing really ever WOWed me. I thought their tinted moisturizers were OK and I didn’t care for their eye shadows.

I met a Mary Kay rep when I was doing a “Girls Night Out” event last weekend and she was really excited to show me the new products that they just came out with. She was getting married this past weekend and was telling me how this new foundation was just amazing and how it’s so great for professional use. Read the rest of this entry »

Product Review: “Crackle” Nail Polish by China Glaze

February 10th, 2011

I went to get a pedicure (ahhhh…..much needed after 2 month btw!!!) & they had this new nail polish that is really going to be hot this Spring. It’s a type of polish that gives a cracked look on your nail as it dries. You pick any type of base color and it shows through the other top color that actually “cracks”. I really like that it is a very different design look and very bold! I’m sure it looks cool on the finger nails, but I decided to experiment just on my toes for now. I will try out all their other color combinations in the coming months. FUN!

(In the picture posted I have on OPI “You don’t know Jacques” as a base & the China Glaze white on top.)

Top 5 Makeup Mistakes – article

February 4th, 2011

#1 Good Foundation, Poor Application

Your foundation may be the best, but if you’re a novice at applying it, even the best products can look caked on, or worse, leave a mark at your jaw line.

For starters, use a skin-toned concealer to cover blemishes and other imperfections. Then, apply your foundation of choice sparingly, using a slightly moist foundation brush. Start at the center of your face and blend outwards.

Some women like to use foundation that is a bit darker than their natural skin tone to add some color to their complexions. You know who you are. This is what blush and bronzer are for so please, opt for a foundation that matches your face. If not for us, do it for you neck’s sake.

#2 Penciled In Brows

Does Lindsay’s Frosty Lipstick age her?

I went through a comical stage with my brows just after college. Apparently, I thought  that  the skinnier they were, the smaller my thighs would look. And while my pencil-thin brows are painful to recall, thankfully I didn’t add insult to injury by drawing new brows in with a too dark pencil. Yes, I’m talking to you.

If you can see your brow line at all, you are guilty of making mistake #2. The goal is to keep it natural; opting for a brow powder or brow mascara can help. I like Valerie Beverly Hills’ Brow Palette ($35) and Brow Tamer, a clear brow gel that adds shape and control without color ($25).

Also, pick a hue that’s a shade lighter, not darker, than your brow color. And for those who truly can’t master the art of filling in brows naturally, opt for a brow tint at your favorite local salon or spa, for definition minus the fuss. Read the rest of this entry »

Two New Eye Makeup Looks – article

January 28th, 2011

True Blue

Vanessa Romero; Photo from Glamour.com

Ever since beauty “experts” started calling blue eye shadow tacky (clearly sometime after 1970), real women have been looking for a way to drop a hint of blue into their makeup routine.  But blue eye liner can look current, and celebrities like Rihanna and Blake Lively are out to prove it. The key is to go blue on the lower lash line only while creating a bronze-hued smoky eye look on the upper lid.

To get the look, start by applying a cream shadow base on eye lids. Next, apply a cream shimmer from the lash line up to the crease. I like Julie Hewitt’s Shimmy in Cleo or Goldie ($22).  Using a powder shadow create a “V” horizontally, with one line of the V on the lower lashes and the other line in the crease of lids.

Now it’s time to go blue; pick a hue that complements your eyes. Brown eyes look great with Turquoise liner applied to the lower lash line, like Make Up Forever’s (MUFE) Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil ($16) while blue eyes are complemented by MUFE’s Iridescent Navy Blue and green eyes pop with MUFE’s Blue With Green Highlights on the lower lash line.  To finish the look, dab a touch of cream shimmer at the inner corner of the eye and blend it into the lower and upper lash line. Product Review: Contour Kit by Smashbox

January 25th, 2011

One of the best makeup tricks is using different color foundations, concealers and powders to give your face different dimensions to make your nose look more narrow, your face less round, and to give the illusion of more defined cheek bones.

I came across this palette and decided to give it a try since it’s an all-in-one! I went ahead and did all the areas of my face and after a few trial and errors, got the look just right! You need to make sure to blend blend blend so that your not leaving lines behind. If you learn to use it right, this is a really good kit to do the trick. The darkest shade goes a long way with just a little and the lightest shade is just the right amount of color for highlighting. You can also use this on your eyes for a natural day look! The kit comes with a brush that works really well for this look (just not meant for the eyes).

Eyebrows

January 4th, 2011

One of the biggest makeup trends you can see this season are bold & very defined eyebrows, so how fitting that I did something different with mine! Believe it or not, I had NEVER had my eyebrows touched by anyone until last week – I had always shaped them myself. I went and had them threaded and they turned out amazing. She only had to get rid of a few hairs, but it made a nice difference. (So use this as a reminder to be careful & only pluck a little at a time when you are doing them yourself!)

I had a girl ask me a few weeks ago how I defined her eyebrows so well without an eyebrow pencil, so I wanted to share with you my preferred way of doing this. I use the matte eyeshadow “Coquette” by MAC & apply it with a very short & flat brush. I find that this color goes well with just about everyone’s eyebrows. I follow the shape of the natural eyebrow, but add bolder angles where they end and at the arch.

Eyebrows frame your face, so it is important your eyebrows are always well groomed!
